Site Selection Process
The actual site of the memorial is not yet determined. We must conduct an "Alternative Site Selection Study" to consider other sites.
Marion Park is formed along the South Carolina Avenue diagonal street in the City of Washington plan created by Major Pierre L'Enfant for President George Washington and the Congress of the United States. The park is on axis with the Nathanael Greene statue that was dedicated in 1877. Click here to see a map of Marion Park.
The final selection of the site will require consultation with the National Capital Memorial Advisory Commission, approval on behalf of the Secretary of the Interior, as well as by the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission. The extensive site approval and subsequent design approval process has been established since enactment in 1986 of the Commemorative Works Act (Public Law 99-652).
